Supporting Madagascar's COVID-19 vaccine uptake at 78 years

“The vaccine at all costs to survive the COVID-19 pandemic.” This is the credo of Justine Rasoanindrina, a grandmother of eight Ambatondrazaka district, more than 270 km from Madagascar’s capital, Antananarivo.

At 78, Justine continues to practice both as a masseuse and a matron. Well-known in her community, she embraced the profession of masseuse at the age of 15 and that of matron at 22 years old. Because of her devotion to the work of giving and saving life, Justine is part of the steering committee of the Association of Traditional Medicine practitioners in Ambatondrazaka.

But a little over a year ago, Justine added a new string to her bow: she became a community mobilizer in June 2021, following the death of her brother from COVID-19.

COVID-19 Vaccine Demand Global Event Report

To characterize and catalogue innovative, promising, and proven demand interventions, a virtual meeting was held on 22 and 23 June 2022.

The event featured a high-level roundtable attended by Ministers of Health, representatives from global and regional agencies and civil society organizations.

Training Opportunities

UNICEF, WHO, CDC, GAVI: Comprehensive Demand training on behavioural insights, social data, digital and infodemic management, service experience and RCCE for the promotion of vaccine demand to strengthen routine immunization and COVID-19 recovery.
To address the issue of heterogeneous demand expertise at the country level and build a cadre of country demand experts at scale, a first-of-its-kind comprehensive training on ‘accelerating recovery of routine immunization, reaching zero-dose children and promoting COVID-19 vaccine demand was conducted in June, 2022. This is a multi-agency (WHO – IVB and Infodemic Management, UNICEF, US CDC and GAVI) initiative under the umbrella of the Vaccination Demand Hub and was based on the latest innovative thinking in the demand space, and further supported by USAID, BBC Media Action, JSI, Sabin, and many other CSOs. The 4-week intensive training trained a cohort of ~600 participants from 92 countries, and the curriculum was based on an interactive learning pedagogy consisting of lectures, simulation exercises and peer-to-peer engagement.

NEW: Management and safe disposal of COVID-19 vaccination waste at health facility level

This job aid provides guidance on safe and effective management and disposal of wastes generated by COVID-19 vaccination activities at the facility level. It reminds health workers and wastes handlers that used and unused COVID-19 vaccine vials (expired or spoiled) are not infectious waste and do not require special treatment. Generally, disposal of COVID-19-related waste should follow the practice used for other health care and vaccination-related wastes, in accordance with national policies, guidelines and standards.

NEW: Rapid Review of COVID-19 Vaccination Roll Out
A systematic review of COVID-19 vaccine roll-out experiences and lessons learned is being undertaken by the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership project, and COVID GAP, to produce learnings for program audiences at all levels—global, regional, country, and sub-national. This slide deck is the first in a series of multiple rapid review products, highlighting learning, best practices, and recommendations for one of the eight selected themes

RECENT: Global Compendium of country knowledge on COVID-19 vaccination

The global COVID-19 vaccination rollout is the biggest and fastest in history and no public health intervention compares to it. In 2021, under extraordinary time constraints and severe programmatic challenges, countries used a range of approaches and strategies in all aspects of vaccination activities, to introduce and deploy COVID-19 vaccines as rapidly and effectively as possible.

Sharing the different approaches and strategies, provides an opportunity to foster cross-country learning, facilitate peer-to-peer problem solving, and establish a pool of knowledge and skills to help inform actions that may be leveraged in a future health crisis that requires vaccination. For this reason, and with thanks to all stakeholders involved a repository of implementation experiences has been developed as a clearinghouse to capture and preserve key country experiences.

Crossing the Finish Line Together with the COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery Partnership

In just one year, vaccinations have saved over 20 million lives and reduced deaths by more than 60%. But this is not enough. The COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery Partnership was set up to support the many countries lagging on COVID-19 coverage and balancing various other health- and non-health priorities. Because the pandemic is not over until those most at-risk are reached.

Closing the Vaccine Gap

In 2022 the world is experiencing one of the largest backslides of global immunization rates in history. Now is the only chance we have to work together, to pull resources and invest in vaccinating humanity against all diseases and illnesses. And we must do it together!
