The first case of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was confirmed at the Vic Village-North apartment building this Friday. It is the first case to be discovered at either student on-campus or off-campus housing at the University of Michigan.
In an email from the leasing office sent to residents, the office confirmed the case while outlining various guidelines and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on minimizing exposure and spread of the virus.
Dear subscribers,
Good evening,
A lot of things have changed on campus this week, but at least the Daily Digest is always here to bring you up to date with the most pressing on-campus news straight to your inbox.
This week, the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed at a student housing site, the NCAA Tournament was canceled and the âUâ canceled commencement and encourages students to go home.
In an email sent to students on Friday, University President Mark Schlissel encouraged all students to leave campus and return home, while announcing the Spring Commencement has been canceled.
In addition, the email announced that all final exams will be taken remotely, though campus will remain open for those who choose to stay.
Following Schlisselâs statement released Wednesday, Center for Global and Intercultural Study (CGIS) students were informed that all study abroad programs are being suspended effective immediately.
The email included instructions urging students to follow CDC guidelines to minimize exposure and spread of the virus, including self-quarantining for those who have traveled to a high-risk country or area.
According to a statement from Ben Gerstein, president of Central Student Government (CSG), the CSG executive branch has transitioned its funds to support emergency resources within the University.
Services that the CSG budget will go towards include the Maize and Blue Cupboard, a food pantry based in Betsy Barbour Residence Hall for students, and the Dean of Studentsâ Student Emergency Funds.
Amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 NCAA menâs and womenâs basketball tournaments have been canceled.
The move comes after a series of athletic cancellations, the least of which is the âUâs decision to cease all athletic events, including off-season practices and spring recruitment.
