While Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump won an unexpected victory in the general election Tuesday night, on the state and congressional level Democrats dominated in traditionally blue Ann Arbor.

Rep. Debbie Dingell (D–Mich.) won her bid for re-election in Washtenaw County with 65 percent of the vote. Dingell has represented Michigan’s 12th District since January 2015.

In a statement, Dingell said she plans to continue to work to aid middle-class families, focusing on issues such as the economy and college affordability.

Donald Trump has won the presidential election, leaving some students fearful while others celebrate. After the election was called last night, many students gathered on the Diag to host a vigil. According to polls we conducted, student civic preferences on campus differ from the national voting averages. And on a local level, Debbie Dingell and Yousef Rabhi have emerged victorious, and Chuck Warpehoski has won the ward 5 election for Ann Arbor City Council.

Students gather on Diag following election results to host vigil

Immediately following President-elect Donald Trump’s unexpected victory over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, about 30 students at the University of Michigan gathered in the Diag to hold a vigil for the country and the rights of minorities.

Following Clinton’s concession of the election to Trump around 3 a.m., several groups of students brought candles to the Diag in what they said was a mechanism to cope with the election news. In addition to the gathering, students chalked the Diag with phrases such as “You belong here” and “Coexist.”

In a large upset victory, Republican nominee Donald Trump won the presidential election after capturing Wisconsin, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, which Democrats had considered crucial to their victory. The race was called at 2:30 a.m. by the Associated Press.

In his victory speech, Trump framed the United States as needing to unite together under his leadership.  

Councilmember Warpehoski wins Ward 5 election

Incumbent Councilmember Chuck Warpehoski (D–Ward 5), who has served four years on the Ann Arbor City Council, defeated political newcomer David Silkworth (I) Tuesday in the Ward 5 City Council race. Of the five Council member positions up for re-election this cycle, Ward 5 was the only contested race. This will be Warpehoski’s third term on City Council.

University student civic preferences differ from national voting averages

Throughout the 2016 presidential election, candidates from both major political parties visited the University of Michigan and other locations across the state leading up to the primaries and general election to mobilize millennial voters. While this key electorate has had low voter participation rates historically, University students have deviated from that trend in this presidential election.
