My mailbox is going to feel so empty without all the political ads once Election Day has come and gone. Speaking of which, be aware fake Donald Trump ads suggesting Ann Arbor voters should approve two city election reform proposals are being circulated. Early in-person voting centers for the Nov. 5 election are now open through Sunday, Nov. 3 in cities and townships across Michigan. Find out where and when to vote here. Michigan’s third-largest city has decided against verifying mail ballots early, which could potentially make receiving results slower. |

The economy is a political hot potato, but voters just see bigger grocery bills |
On paper, the economy looks good: Inflation is down. Unemployment rates are low. And the stock market is booming. But to voters, the data points don’t matter. Sticker shock does. A majority of voters believe the economy is on the wrong track, a recent Harvard-Harris poll found, and 62% characterized it as weak. A September poll from the Pew Research Center found 81% of registered voters said the economy will be very important to their vote. And 9 in 10 voters are likely heading to the polls thinking about the economy. For some Michigan voters, according to a MLive survey, the race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris is about more than just matters of policy – it’s about the integrity and moral character of the candidates, and worries about the “future of democracy.” |

To know: Michigan is among three new states where people have been sickened by an E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burger. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that 26 new illnesses have been reported, bringing the total to 75. Ahead of the holiday season, West Michigan doctors are urging parents to be aware of the high likelihood that children under 2-years-old will contract a respiratory illness with potentially serious consequences. Century-old Up North dam creates year-round recreation – and electricity |
Did you know?: Near Brethren in Manistee County, the Tippy Dam was completed in 1918. At the time, it was known for its innovative design. Today, it’s Consumers Energy’s second largest hydro dam, producing electricity for thousands of customers. It also serves a uniquely successful hibernaculum for bats. While we're talking history: During the two-year renovation of the 19th century Sleeping Bear Inn, treasures preserved in time were found on the grounds, including in the walls themselves. Get ready for cosplay: One of the largest Japanese anime conventions in the world, Youmacon, is taking place from Thursday, Oct. 31 through Sunday, Nov. 3 at Huntington Place in downtown Detroit. |
