What’s the first thing you reach for in the morning? If you’re like me, it’s your phone, to turn off your alarm. But once it’s off, then what? News? Facebook? Instagram? Wordle -- or its equally addictive cousin, Waffle? And once you’re there, how much time do you burn up?
It might be time to think about a digital detox, as suggested in our Chatter story today. I remember putting my daughter, Kawai, on such a detox when she was in high school. The first 36 hours of it revealed an astonishing change in attitude and behavior. She lost the sullen “I hate the world” crankiness that had been hanging on her like a cloud and was more chatty. She later admitted that she had been glad I took her phone because she had finally been able to sleep.
“Brianna always texts me at midnight or 2 a.m.,” she groused. “I finally didn’t hear the pa-toink and I could just sleep. And, I wasn’t always looking at my phone to see who liked my posts.”
Who owns what? Do you own your device -- or does it own you? Shake off the digital leash this weekend. Put your phone down for a day (or half a day) and see what happens. Then let me know how it went. I’m always listening.
