The Future of Tenure

For as long as tenure has been around, it’s had its critics, and their voices have grown louder as American politics have become more polarized. But experts inside the academy have also criticized the institution, pointing out that colleges often leave criteria for earning it opaque. More and more, college leaders and higher-ed experts are considering whether it’s possible to ensure the essential work of a college or university without tenure. Research shows that faculty members and administrators are not as divided on the topic as you might think. At many institutions, they are collaborating to find a way forward.

Building a Faculty That Flourishes will examine the current state of play, challenges facing the professoriate, and new workforce models that have emerged.
