February 20, 2021 A new Gallup poll shows that more Americans than ever are interested in a new political party rising to challenge both the Democratic and Republican parties. Most of that increase comes from the Republican's camp as people like Arkansas state senator Jim Hendren, nephew of the state's GOP governor, are ditching the party post-Trump. Are we seeing the rise of a new third party? Maybe not so much.
"This flirtation with a third party is, in many ways, a ritual of American politics, as the losing side in a presidential contest invariably grumbles about the status quo," Kevin M. Kruse writes. History shows that while third-parties have come and gone, they haven't had much of an impact on U.S. elections, Kruse adds. And he isn't betting that this is the time that changes.
