 January 13, 2021  President Donald Trump's commitment to democracy has been apathetic at best, a feeling that he's shared widely with his followers. But as much as we'd like to see Trump as the source of the antidemocratic spirit that filled the insurrectionists at the U.S. Capitol last week, it's a much deeper problem than just the president. Instead, the states have been, to paraphrase Justice Louis Brandies, laboratories for anti-democracy.
"We can’t pretend that the people who overran the Capitol sprung forth fully formed like Athena from Zeus’s skull, clad in QAnon shirts, MAGA hats, and makeshift tactical armor," Hayes Brown writes in his latest essay. "The strikes against voting rights, encouragement of political violence, and bolstering of extremists on the fringe that have defined the Trump era and its attacks on the democratic system all have roots at the state level."
