Like many of you growing up, for years at Christmas dinner at my grandmother's house I would be relegated to the kid's table in the living room with my brother and cousins while my parents, aunts and uncles sat at the big table in the kitchen. Occasionally you might get to get in there and grab some bread or a second helping of something, but there were only so many seats, and you knew you'd have to wait your turn for one of them. One day. That's where college athletics could be headed. The Power Five appears very much as though it's gravitating toward a Power Two: the SEC and the Big Ten. There's even some opinion that some of the teams currently within those two conferences will find themselves without a seat at the grown-ups' table one day. For LSU and Florida State, who meet Sunday in the Caesars Superdome in the Allstate Louisiana Kickoff game (6:30 p.m., ABC) the time to position yourself is now ahead of whatever other changes may be to come. Not surprisingly, and not without good reason, LSU President William Tate believes his school is in a good position. And he doesn't envy any of the schools in the ACC ... like Florida State. While the SEC is on the road to expansion by 2025 (possibly 2024) with the arrival of Texas and Oklahoma, the current 14-team version of the SEC begs one familiar question: who is LSU's biggest football rival? We asked you, our readers, and you gave us your thoughts. Our Patrick Magee logs some of your responses here. Sunday's game — which by the way is a sellout — is LSU's first in the Superdome since beating Clemson in January 2020 in the CFP National Championship Game. Keith Spera tells us that there will be plenty of entertainment on the field aside from the Tigers and Seminoles from Cajun fiddler star Amanda Shaw and the rapper Choppa, with their remake of "Louisiana Saturday Night." Yes, we know the game will be Sunday night. We've sent lots of LSU football content your way this week, not only on Sunday's season opener but on the Tigers in general. So, for your viewing pleasure, here's a handly little compendium of everything you need to know about the contest. Finally, before we go, our countdown to kickoff has dwindled down to the wee single digits. Thursday marks three days until the big game, so here is our "LSU by the Numbers" book excerpt featuring No. 3, All-American running back/kick returner Kevin Faulk. Well, that book excerpt link is our cue to cut out. We'll be back with more content tomorrow, anchored by Wilson Alexander's big profile on first-year coach Brian Kelly. I'm sure you won't want to miss it. Scott Rabalais |
