We've got big news, Voornaam. I'm proud and extremely excited to announce that the Keynote Speaker for The 11th Oregon Summit will be Congresswoman Barbara Lee from California!
Get tickets for the Oregon âSummit Congresswoman Lee wasborn in Texas and grew up in the segregated Southwest where she learned from an early age the importance of standing up for oneâs beliefs and of fighting for equality for all. Barbara later moved to the San Francisco/East Bay Area so that she could attend Mills College in Oakland. During college, she quickly became a leader in the regionâs vibrant civil rights movementâbeing elected president of the Black Student Union. Her commitment as a community activist led her to get involved in Representative Shirley Chisholmâs campaign for president. Acting on the advice she received from Representative Chisholm to âget involvedâ, Barbara served as an intern in then-Congressman Ron Dellumsâ officeâa place she would spend the next decade of her life in service to her community. Upon the retirement of Congressman Dellums in February 1998, Barbara Lee ran to succeed her former boss in the House of Representatives. In a special election held in April 1998, she won convincingly, receiving over 67% of the vote. In 2001, Congresswoman Lee was the lone member to vote against AUMF (Authorization For Use of Military Force) because she regarded it as as âa blank check (for President Bush) to attack anyone involved in the September 11 eventsâanywhere, in any country, without regard to our nation's long-term foreign policy, economic and national security interests, and without time limit...â Since entering Congress, she has authored or co-authored every major piece of HIV/AIDS legislation. She serves on the Budget Committee and the powerful Appropriations Committee, which oversees all federal government spending. She is a long-standing elected member of the DNC, where she has taken an active role in making the party more progresive, diverse, and grassroots-driven. She has also served as a key member of the Democratic Platform drafting committee in 2012, 2016 and 2020. She serves as the honorary Chair of One Voice PAC and Chair of the DCCC's Winning With Women of Color program. Congresswoman Lee is the highest ranking Black woman in Congress, serving as Co-Chair of the Policy and Steering Committee. As Co-Chair, Rep. Lee works to ensure that committees reflect the diversity, dynamism, and integrity of the Democratic Caucus. She also works to advance the policies that comprise the Democratic âFor the Peopleâ agenda. In addition, she currently serves as the Chair of the Majority Leaderâs Task Force on Poverty and Opportunity, Co-Chair of the Pro-Choice Caucus, and Co-Chair of the Cannabis Caucus. She is the former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. See you in Sunriver! KC Hanson
