The late Cleveland ace Luis Tiant’s part in some unlikely political bridge-building: John Soares
The Luis Tiant family reunion in the 1975 World Series, gave the Cuban-born ace, a former Cleveland star then pitching for the Red Sox, the rare chance to pitch in front of his parents after Cuba’s Communist dictator Fidel Castro surprisingly permitted them to leave the country to visit their son. The reunion was a triumph of détente-era sports diplomacy, and of bipartisanship in American politics. It's not too late to recapture that spirit, writes guest columnist John Soares, who teaches history, including history of the Cold War and sport history, at the University of Notre Dame.
