Assess your environmental impact with BS 8583
With the UK committed to halting overall loss of biodiversity by 2020, there is a growing need for businesses to report their biodiversity impacts, dependencies and responses. Yet so far there has been no guidance on biodiversity in formal standards. We've developed BS 8583 to fill the biodiversity management gap.
BS 8583 describes a four-step process to enable immediate improvements in biodiversity, and provides examples of biodiversity opportunities and risks, all in the context of global, national and local targets for biodiversity, and UK policies and initiatives.

Take part in standards on adaptation to climate change

Our climate is changing. Global warming and increased rainfall will have serious effects on health, biodiversity, ecosystems and the goods and services they provide. Adaptation means taking appropriate action to prevent or minimise the damage caused by the effects of climate change.

Work has begun to identify where standards are needed in the area of adaptation to climate change. We are looking for experts to inform our work in this area. If you would like to help us to develop strategy and standards on adaptation to climate change then please contact

Join our committe on natural capital

Temporary water supplies

Concerts, festivals, building sites and outdoor functions all need drinking water, but often the permanent supply is inadequate or non-existent.
BS 8551:2015 can minimize that risk as it gives recommendations and guidance for providing and managing temporary water supplies and distribution networks.
