TECHNOLOGY PODCAST (56 MIN) Unpacking Cybersecurity and Social Media Failures: Where Do We Go from Here? Last year Russia infiltrated the digital networks of federal agencies and many of America’s largest corporations, and last week’s armed insurrection on the US Capitol was fomented through disinformation campaigns on social media. Cyberattacks and manipulation of elections and domestic affairs threaten national security and global relations. John Carlin of the Aspen Institute’s Cybersecurity & Technology Program leads a conversation with Kevin Mandia, CEO of FireEye, the cybersecurity company that uncovered last year’s massive Russian hack, plus Senator Mark Warner, vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and Luta Security founder and digital defense expert Katie Moussouris. They discuss how the Russian hack was discovered and what it means for the future of digital security worldwide, including how to assign responsibility for cybersecurity and social media failures. Warner also shares his assessment of the damage of a foreign-led cyber attack compared to that of the domestic insurrection he experienced at the Capitol. Their conversation was recorded on January 7, 2021. Presented by Aspen Digital.Listen. |

HEALTH VIDEO (12 MIN) Vaccine Rollout: Why Is It Taking So Long? This week marks one year since the first known COVID-19 death. And while the remarkable pace of vaccine development is widely praised, the lag in its distribution is concerning. Only nine million, or one-third, of the total available doses in the United States have made their way into the arms of Americans. What’s causing the delays? Katherine Ellen Foley, health and science reporter at Quartz Health Report, discusses the process with Dr. Florian Krammer, professor of vaccinology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Krammer sheds light on many complexities of the current COVID situation, including the latest knowledge on new variants of the virus. Is there enough diversity among the vaccines in terms of how they attack the virus and its mutations? How are scientists working to better understand immunity? How are we approaching the ethical dilemmas of which populations get the shot before others? Krammer shares when we’ll see “serious progress” in the rollout and what it will look like over the coming months. Watch. |
