The look of love is different from the look of thought

"If you pass on through the meadows with their thousand flowers of every color imaginable, from bright red to yellow and purple, and their bright green grass washed clean by last night’s rain, rich and verdant – again without a single movement of the machinery of thought – then you will know what love is. To look at the blue sky, the high full-blown clouds, the green hills with their clear lines against the sky, the rich grass and the fading flower – to look without a word of yesterday; then, when the mind is completely quiet, silent, and undisturbed by any thought, when the observer is completely absent - then there is unity. Not that you are united with the flower, or with the cloud, or with those sweeping hills; rather, there is a feeling of complete non-being in which the division between you and another ceases. The woman carrying those provisions she bought in the market, the big black Alsatian dog, the two children playing with the ball - if you can look at all these without a word, without a measure, without any association, then the quarrel between you and another ceases. This state, without the word, without thought, is the expanse of mind that has no boundaries, no frontiers within which the I and the not-I can exist. Don’t think this is imagination, or some flight of fancy, or some desired mystical experience; it is not. It is as actual as the bee on that flower, or the little girl on her bicycle, or the man going up a ladder to paint the house - the whole conflict of the mind in its separation has come to an end. You look without the look of the observer; you look without the value of the word and the measurement of yesterday. The look of love is different from the look of thought. One leads in a direction where thought cannot follow, and the other leads to separation, conflict, and sorrow. From this sorrow, you cannot go to the other. The distance between the two is made by thought, and thought cannot by any stride reach the other.

As you walk back by the little farmhouses, the meadows, and the railway line, you will see that yesterday has come to an end: life begins where thought ends.

J. Krishnamurti
Excerpt from The Only Revolution

Dear Friends,

We welcome you to read our most current Annual Report, which provides financial data for 2021-22 and important information about the activities at the Foundation, Center, and School.

The insights of Krishnamurti invite questions such as “is it possible to simply observe without interference?” He says there is complete non-being when the mind is quiet and the observer is absent. In this state, the division between us and the world around us disappears; one sees without the observer or the knowledge of the past. Krishnamurti suggests it is not a mystical experience or a fantasy; it is as real as the gray clouds of a thunderstorm or the puddles on the ground that follow rainfall. His words suggest that it is only from this state that one will know what love is. When we look without regard to prior experience, we may see what Krishnamurti means by the statement life begins where thought ends.

The Immeasurable is one of our projects that aims to disseminate the work of Krishnamurti online, targeting new audiences. Its function is to communicate the teachings to the younger generations, focusing on themes relevant to our world and lives. The Immeasurable is available as an online magazine and on various social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, available on short and long-form videos, text, and photos. Those who enjoy an audio format can also subscribe to The Immeasurable Podcast. The podcast features three types of content: original Krishnamurti material, interviews centering on the teachings, and group explorations. Content from The Immeasurable helps illustrate Krishnamurti’s insights and serves as a great entry point for those who are new or unfamiliar with the teachings.

Next month we are offering three programs, one in-person at the Krishnamurti Center and two online. The first program, A Completely Different Kind of Observation, is a five day in-depth program occurring at the Center from February 6-10. Participants of this program will deep dive into the enormous impact observation has on our individual or collective sense of reality and existence.

An online program titled Is Attachment Love? occurs February 13-17. During this program, participants will explore questions such as: are there different meanings of attachment? Is it possible to be in intimate relationships without attachment? Is that even desirable? Attendees of this program will meet online for 2.5 hour sessions that will include but not be limited to discussion/dialogue, some short video clips, and short excerpts from texts.

The last program in February runs from the 19th-26th and is a unique in-person, fully-immersive eight day intensive retreat exploring the core transformational teachings of Krishnamurti. The program, Awakening to the Unburdened Mind, is a special invitation honoring new participants and anyone who has only attended the eight day intensive retreats once before. This intensive retreat is a rare opportunity for any person who has been exposed to Krishnamurti’s teachings to take the next important step into a deeper dimension of what he is pointing to, a transformation of human consciousness and a profound realization of the unburdened mind beyond conflict and fear.

As part of our Residential Scholar Program, we also provide a unique opportunity for young people to live, study, and work within the community at the Krishnamurti Center. Applications are now being accepted for Spring 2023.

In addition to hosting programs, the Krishnamurti Center in Ojai also maintains the Krishnamurti Retreat and a Study Center for individuals who come to explore the teachings. The Study Center & Library is located at Pine Cottage, the former home of Krishnamurti, where he lived between 1922 and 1986; in 1978 a new addition was attached to the original house. The Pine Cottage addition serves as the Center’s large meeting hall and library. The original house is used for small meetings, private video viewing, and as a quiet meditation space. All visitors are welcome to explore the Center’s grounds, tour Krishnamurti’s home, and browse the library. At Pine Cottage they may sip a fresh cup of coffee or tea on the patio.

I, along with the trustees and staff of the Foundation, extend our sincerest gratitude to all of our supporters for your invaluable contributions in furthering the mission of the KFA today and for many years to come.

Sincerely,

 Jaap Sluijter

A Completely Different Kind of Observation
Online Program
February 6-10

Is the observer divided from what it observes? Does this division distort the very thing it observes that affects all subsequent thinking, feeling, and action? Is there an observation without distortion?

Join us for this five day in-depth program together as we deep dive into the enormous impact observation has on our individual or collective sense of reality and existence. Is there a completely different kind of observation? Krishnamurti suggests that there might even be a totally incommensurable kind of existence.
