Good morning. You may have heard about the Norwegian tourist who got turned away at Newark Airport after ICE agents found a meme of a bald JD Vance on his phone. Staff Writer Isa Farfan spoke with the 21-year-old, whose dystopian story somehow also involves a problematic sausage and the very Magrittean question of whether something is or is not a pipe.
But not everyone is fortunate enough to have a safe home to return to. In LA, Sharon Mizota reflects from a deeply personal perspective on the trauma of deportation: “Many in the Japanese-American community share this intimate understanding of the lasting loss and pain such violations bring,” writes Mizota, whose family members were incarcerated and dispossessed by the US during World War II.
