Hi John! Happy Monday! Do you have an art-making habit, or would you like to start one? When my kids were little, it seemed impossible to find time to make art and I learned to carve out time for drawing and painting with them. It was great! We played and created together. As they got older, that time challenge was replaced with another: running a college dorm. Late-night events and middle of the night fire alarms don't really lend themselves to a stable routine. 😜 With some trial and error I've landed on early mornings as the most productive time to create and I love it. In hindsight, I bet this would have worked when my kids were little, too. All said, establishing and keeping an art habit isn't easy, but if you enjoy making art, I firmly believe it's a goal worth pursuing!
The routine I've settled into since January starts with coffee, breakfast for our dog, a little reading, and art journaling. This morning, Scott was up before me so I had to do a little pivot. I made us both coffee and moved my operation to the kitchen. My art journaling process has three parts: Make something each day Try something new Keep it shortRead The Morning Art Routine for all the details A question for you: Some of my readers are here for ideas around supporting kids' art, and others are here for inspiration in making their own art. Some are here for both! How about you? Art-making is for everyone: kids and adults, and it can be playful and open-ended for both. The essence of making art doesn't really change as we get older. In any case, this is new territory for me and I'm not sure how gracefully I'm combining or separating the two, so please let me know if you have any suggestions! Today is an adult-art kind of message, but kids also benefit from creative routines and there's room in this to interpret how you could introduce kids to this concept as well. Experimenting and playing, Rachelle
