Morning, y'all, and welcome to the March 16 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter. As of this writing, the Saints have not signed this sportswriter to a mid-level free agent contract (yet). (pokes with stick)That's the sentiment a lot of Saints fans seem to have right now, pleading with their team, c'mon, do something. Free agency began in earnest Monday when teams could begin negotiating with players, and the Saints largely sat the week out, agreeing to a couple short-term, low money deals for players who are not expected to play big roles in 2024. Will it continue to be this way? I'm not so sure. The Saints are a team that likes to wait out the initial wave of big-money signings to see what kind of bargains may emerge on the other side. Part of this is out of necessity with New Orleans always being up against the salary cap wall (though, if the Saints really wanted to make a splash, they could still do it with some future repercussions). And though the Saints aren't going to sign any of the top-of-the-market players who could've really helped this team now (cough, Danielle Hunter, cough), there are still plenty of options out there who could make a lot of sense at the right price. I get into all of that in more detail here, as well as taking a look at a few things we've learned about the Saints this week. Introducing... Let's meet some of the Saints newest players: Linebacker Willie Gay signed with New Orleans hoping to find more playing time than he got in Kansas City, even if he's currently blocked by two players on the Saints roster. The Saints added veteran receiver Cedrick Wilson to the mix, bringing some experience to a young group and also giving New Orleans someone who can play both inside and outside. New Orleans added another former St. Aug standout in Stanley Morgan, who spent his first five pro seasons playing mostly special teams for Cincinnati. Fullbacks are people, tooSure, the fullback position may be a dying breed on NFL and college football rosters as teams veer toward lighter offenses that prioritize space and speed. But it still has a place with the New Orleans Saints, who now have two fullbacks on their roster. We caught up with Adam Prentice and Zander Horvath to discuss why the position is still relevant, and especially so in the scheme Klint Kubiak is expected to bring with him from San Francisco. Good stuff from colleague Matthew Paras. Y'all enjoy the rest of the weekend while we're trying to track down the latest Saints news. And if you've got time, go check out our colleague Jeff Duncan at the Tulane Book Fest today. Cheers, Luke Johnson |
