The Seed of a Million Years
Krishnamurti Foundation of America

"Our brains, our minds are the result of a million years of knowledge. Man from the beginning of time must have asked himself if there is something more than this everlasting grind of work, of thought, of suffering, of sexual desires satisfied and the agony of having more, and all the rest of it. He must have asked a million years ago if there is a reality, if there is truth, if there is something timeless, something that cannot be measured by man, however clever, however erudite - from the very beginning of time.

That inquiry, that seed, is still with us. But in the inquiry, in the flowering of that seed of a million years of human longing, of hoping and trying to find out, he has been caught in illusions— in the illusory nature of gods, the illusions that he has created not only for himself but which, having created them for himself, imposes them on others—which is the function of the guru. So, that seed has never completely developed because we have been side-tracked, we have been carried away by those who say, ‘I know’, ‘Do this, don’t do that’, ‘Follow this system, don’t follow that system’, ‘I am a better guru than your guru’, ‘I know more, I am much more illumined than you.’ We have been side-tracked for centuries by the priests, by the believers in books, by those who say, ‘I know God.’ You know all this.

So this seed that has been planted in man, in his brain, for millions of years has never had the right soil, the right light, the right darkness— nothing. But it is there still. And during these talks, we are going to find out whether it is possible for that seed to grow and flower, multiply and cover the earth. That is the function, the necessity of every man because in this world there is such confusion, violence, corruption, every form of degeneration. And if we do not find that seed and let it flower, we are going to destroy ourselves."

Dear Friends,

We have released Bulletin #93 and, as we have done every year, it's been sent out to donors. In this Bulletin, we focused on the 50th anniversary of the KFA. It contains a brief biography of Krishnamurti, the history of the Pepper Tree Retreat, and current and future KFA projects, among other articles. Click here to read the digital version.

Last March, we took a big step in our project to beautify and restore the orchards at the East End with the help of students and staff from Oak Grove. On a bright, sunny morning in March, with the smell of rain still in the air, we planted one hundred pomegranates along the path leading to the pavilion, and close to a hundred and forty olive trees near the entrance to the property. Click here to see pictures of this event. The trees have done very well, so much so that we are continuing our efforts by planting another hundred olive trees. Additionally, we are also planting thirty-six pixie citrus trees along the path from Pine Cottage Library to the Pepper Tree Retreat.

On another note, we have added to our online store a recently released book titled The Seed of a Million Years. This series of six talks, given by Krishnamurti in Madras in 1979-80, marks a departure from his usual style of exposition. Usually, in the opening talk, he would dwell first on the problems of the world and then on the psychological factors underlying them. But here he starts straight away with the most ancient quest of human beings to find that which is sacred. You can find the book here.

We have a 5-day in-depth study program coming up at the Krishnamurti Center in Ojai in January 2020 titled What is Love? Love is everywhere in our lives, in our relationships, our communities and our entertainment industries. But is this actually love? If it is not love, what is it? This retreat will attempt to explore this extraordinary theme that could be one of the greatest deficiencies in our lives.

Finally, as we approach the end of the year, we want to direct your attention to our Annual Appeal. Please join us in keeping these teachings and opportunities available by making a one-time or monthly donation today.

Sincerely,

Jaap Sluijter
Executive Director

Silent Retreat
Weekend Retreat

This program is a unique opportunity to come together in silence at the Krishnamurti Center. The intention of this weekend program is to be a retreat in the deepest sense. It is rare that we have the opportunity to share a space in silence together; to gather together with the intention of minimizing the external distractions of the world to come in touch with the quiet space of our being. We will begin the retreat with some short reading and then refrain from reading, writing, and speaking for the remainder of the weekend.

Change That Cannot Be Sought
In-Depth Study Program Feb 3-7

In these current times, we seem to be surrounded by a world caught in division. And we ourselves may be consumed by innumerable concerns, in which there is little inward space.

In seeing all this, there can be a sense of something deeper needed, a vital change in some way. Yet, in our attempts to address this we may find ourselves simply substituting one pattern of living for another so that pattern-making continues. What is going to bring about a deep inward change, bringing a breath of fresh air and clarity to our living?

The nature of the conversation was argumentative, but there was a sense of affection between us. The vibrant voice on the other end of the phone was persistently posing questions, “What is the self?” “How are the students going to ask these questions?” “What is the point of understanding a self that doesn't, in fact, exist?”
