This week on A Prairie Home Companion Time for some sweet corn, Pronto Pups, and mini donuts as we revisit a classic show from the Minnesota State Fair grandstand. We’ve got Shawn Colvin, Tonic Sol-Fa, a marching band, some fine music from our house band, plus our talented acting company.
Highlights include Garrison’s warning about Fair food doxology, “I Feel Fine” from Pat Donohue and the Shoe Band, “It Don’t Mean a Thing” from the Marching Wolfpack, “That’s the Way Love Goes” from Shawn Colvin, “Long Black Train” from Tonic Sol-Fa, plus Guy Noir and Ketchup. And let’s not forget the latest news from Lake Wobegon. The link is posted on Saturdays at 5 p.m. CT each week on our Facebook page. Their dad — a folk music buff — gave Shawn the chording and picking basics, and she fleshed out her chops with Mel Bay books. Now, this South Dakota-born singer-songwriter who calls Austin, Texas, home has chalked up a slew of recordings, three Grammys, and even a few TV acting jobs (including a role on The Simpsons). They have been riding on a wave of successful appearances across the U.S. since they formed at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota, in the mid-1990s. About the name, Tonic Sol-Fa, bassist Jared Dove jokes that “it can only be blamed on heavy drinking.” Among their many recordings is 2020’s four-disc set Playlist. That Time of Year “That Time of Year is a major work: a thoroughgoing portrait of its artist as both a young man and a somewhat sad but grateful oldster. Each period of Keillor’s life is recounted, frequently in novelistic detail, with humor and humility.” —Washington Examiner
