There's a vaccine! Has it saved markets? | By Jessica Beard, Personal finance reporter |
| The prospect of a successful vaccine has injected a dose of positivity into markets and households alike in week two of lockdown two. Pfizer, the American pharmaceutical giant, has developed a Covid-19 vaccine with a 90pc success rate. The news has been a shot in the arm for global stock markets, which rallied to record highs this week after investors dashed to buy and sell. Some stockbrokers crashed under the demand. But that is not to say you should pile into pharmaceutical stocks. Huge profits will not be made from vaccines, experts have warned, which means many investors jumped to buy these shares for the wrong reasons. The stock market may have rocketed this Monday but not every stock went up. Here’s a rundown of the winners and losers from Questor’s recent share tips. Even before the vaccine news brought fresh hope of a Covid-free future, a handful of stocks had been climbing, buoyed by lockdown restrictions. Video conferencing firms and food delivery groups have had a good run – but that tide may turn when the jabs are rolled out. The US election result has also had an effect on stock markets. Here's our round-up of the funds to buy and the stocks to buy now Joe Biden is heading for the White House. Here's what our readers said In our comments section, Chris Cartmill said of Capital gains tax revamp could hit three times more people: "On the one hand, taxing capital at a lower rate than labour is outrageous and helps lead to an ever increasing concentration of wealth. Theoretically it would be great if the rates were equal. On the other hand, capital is extremely mobile and much more mobile than labour. Thus raising tax on capital will lead to capital flight overseas in search of higher post-tax yields and thus the total tax revenue will fall." Join the conversation here | |
