Book of the week
| When my Thread must-read falls on or near Valentine's Day, I suspect you expect to open up a delightful bouquet of charming romance recommendations, all collected with a pretty bow. Instead, I have an absorbing memoir for you about a mature, seasoned, generous love that asks for a heart-wrenching sacrifice. I've recommended "In Love: A Memoir of Love and Loss" by Amy Bloom dozens of times, most recently to a friend whose husband was diagnosed in his mid-60s with Alzheimer's disease. Bloom's memoir brings us into her later-in-life happy marriage -- the blending of their grown families, the accomplishments of their careers -- until Brian begins forgetting things and is eventually diagnosed. Thus begins the heart of the book -- Brian's decision to end his life while he is still cognitively able to make the choice for himself. They'll research options in the U.S. and eventually decide to go to Dignitas in Switzerland. And that passage will be wrenching, deeply loving and merciful. Mystery character answer: Professor James Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes — Kerri Miller, MPR News |
