Hello!
In the class I'm co-teaching on Dorm Space Experience Design, last night our college kids created Installation Art to delight their fellow residents. After an overview of inspiring artists and designers, we sent them off into the dorm with humble materials, like tape and string, to create their own immersive space interventions.
With site-based creativity on my mind, I thought it would be fun to share some installation-related ideas to try with your child or students! I encourage you to look at your space as a canvas to play with.
One more thing - there's a great giveaway for familes with preschool-age kids at the end of this email, so be sure to scroll on through.
- Tape Art, on a LARGE scale. Darel Carey makes optical illusion, room-size pieces with just TAPE! If you have a tape-loving child (mine each went through tape-crazy phases around age 4), you'll enjoy checking this out. You can buy easy-to-remove painters tape to try out your own version of this process.
- Immersive fantasy house. Have you heard of Meow Wolf. It's an interactive art play space in Santa Fe, NM that transports visitors into a fantasy world. This short video from Nick Gray gives you a peek inside the refrigerator. It's on our short list of places to visit!
- Everyday materials change their look on a larger scale. Tara Donovan turns simple everyday materials like plastic cups and pencils into large scale installations. A few years ago we saw her work in person and created a kid-version of her work with cupcake liners, in case you want to give it a try yourself.
- Get inspired by large-scale art. Invite your child to recreate a work of art at home. Around the corner from our home is this technology-based sculpture. After experiencing it with our three year old, she wanted to recreate the piece at home with post-it notes, all over our dining room :) This article also has 5 ideas on how to talk with kids about art.
- Make recycled sculpture: Try your hand at making recycled art sculputres with your child - as young as 3! All you need are recyclables and a hot glue gun (you can man it, or teach your child how to use it safely).
- Why developing your creativity is actually practical! Chase Jarvis, author of the new book, Creative Calling: Establish a Daily Practice, Infuse your World with Meaning, and Suceed in Work & Life. Here's a quick clip from the hour+ interview. If you enjoy it, watch it all here.
- Make scrap wood sculptures. Turn popsicle sticks, dowel pieces, twigs, and other small pieces of wood into a sculpture with this open-ended process that's easy and fun for kids.
- The October Art Challenge is underway. We posted a new month of prompts for your sketchbook or art journal inpsiration this month. I recommend printing a copy and placing it in your art space for daily inpspiration.
- How students would improve their school lunch experience. An inspiring read for any parents or administrators interested in helping kids have a better school lunch experience, with some ideas on using Design Thinking as a tool for improvement.
- Win a Reading Wand and Spanish/Chinese Bilingual Books! It's the easiest way to teach Spanish & Chinese - without the screen! I'm delighted to celebrate the last week of the Kickstarter campaign for our friends at Habbi Habbi. They are about 450% funded and their product is as beautiful and intentional as it is easy-to-use. This is your last week to get it for a deal (where their Reading Wand is essentially free!). In honor of this last week, Habbi Habbi is giving away 1 Starter Set to a TinkerLab reader - in your choice of English-Spanish or English-Chinese. (Starter Set is $127.95 value and includes 1 Reading Wand + 4 Hardcover Board Books). Fill out THIS FORM to enter the giveaway by EOD 10/8/19 (PST).
