How do I wake up on time?” WILLPOWER: “Just do it! Stop hitting that darn snooze button and get out of the… zzzz” SYSTEMS: “I’m going to put an alarm in my bathroom so I have to get out of bed to turn it off. I’m also going to send my early-bird friend a picture of my watch every morning by 6:05 AM to prove that I got up on time.” Socializing: “I need to get up early tomorrow but my friends are inviting me out” WILLPOWER: “I’ll just go out for one drink. I can leave by 8PM and get to bed on time no problem… *3 drinks later at 11PM*... I gotta go!” SYSTEMS: “I’m going to call my friend and tell them that I’d love to hang out but let them know that I need to leave no later than 8PM and won’t be drinking tonight. I’ll also tell my partner that I’ll be home by 8:15 so I have extra accountability.” Exercise: “How do I train more consistently?” WILLPOWER: “Time to get some! I’m going to watch a motivational YouTube video and train everyday this week.” SYSTEMS: “I’m going to hire a personal trainer and pay in advance to make sure I actually show up to my sessions. I’m also going to block of my calendar during our training blocks and make sure that my team knows I’ll be unreachable during these hours.” Money: “I make 6-figures a year! How is it possible that I don’t have any savings?” WILLPOWER: “I’ll just track my spending and make sure to save more” SYSTEMS: “I’ll take 20-minutes to set up an automatic transfer at the beginning of every month so that 10% of my income goes directly to a separate savings account. That way I don’t have to think about it and won’t be tempted to overspend.” I want you to notice a few things here. First, the systems in these examples don’t take very long to set up. In most cases, it’s a few minutes to one hour. Next, when you have systems, you eliminate the need for willpower and discipline almost completely.
