Utah entertainer performed at Trump rallies — and paid the price |

| | Utah entertainer Jason Hewlett found himself immersed in controversy after he performed on Tucker Carlson’s Tour Across America. Hewlett opened for 14 shows, and although politics had never played into his career before, he faced an intense backlash. “I lost multiple gigs, dates that were holds for the future,” he told Lee Benson. “I was unfriended, I lost followers, friends and fans. I was written off by a lot more people when I announced I was doing the show on Halloween night, because they thought I was just doing the Tucker tour but now I was actually endorsing Trump.” The experience gave Hewlett an insight into how Trump won the 2024 election. On the tour, Hewlett saw an America that was desperate for a change, and he believed a “silent majority” would elect Trump. From what is known so far, the 2024 election didn’t lend itself to empty generalizations. Elections seldom do. To buy into the rationale that voters are incompetent is to display a cynical distrust of democracy as a form of governance. We don’t accept that, nor does history reflect that. But while politicians work to parse and dissect what the American electorate tried to tell them on Election Day, Republicans need to ponder this truth. It is their turn to govern, and they soon will be judged by how well they do. The beauty of democracy is that it constantly refreshes and renews itself through elections. Republicans have a rare opportunity. Beginning Jan. 20, they will control the White House, the House and the Senate. Democrats will retain the filibuster in the Senate, but little more.
