| Hello. After the Vatican emerged as a possible host for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, my colleague Sarah Rainsford explains how the Holy See's involvement could affect negotiations. This week's episode of From Our Own Correspondent sees Simon Busch speaking to Venice residents about the city's entry fee experiment. And finally, an ancient bucket is restored from fragments found at a burial site over the past four decades. | |

TOP OF THE AGENDA | No firm plan for Vatican in peace talks |
|
| | Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky met Pope Leo at the Vatican earlier this week. Credit: Ukrainian Presidency Handout | Italy has backed the Vatican as a possible host of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. But the Holy See says that the idea of hosting, or even mediating, talks - which US President Donald Trump suggested was an option - is for now more a hope than any concrete plan, reports Sarah Rainsford. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has accused Russia of "trying to buy time" to stall negotiations, seems open to the proposal. As for Russia's Vladimir Putin, Sarah notes, the talks' location matters little in the absence of major pressure to give ground. |

| The first city to charge an entry free | | An estimated 35 million tourists visited the city last year. Credit: Getty Images | From Our Own Correspondent: Last year, Venice became the first city in the world to charge an access fee. The experiment is back for a second season, as residents' patience with day-tripping tourists - and billionaires taking over the city for their star-studded wedding - wears thin. |
|
| | | It’s the question on almost every Venetian’s lips: will Jeff Bezos have to pay for an entry ticket, the city’s experiment in combating mass tourism, when Mr Amazon marries his TV star fiancée in the city in June? That Bezos appears to have hired every water taxi in Venice ahead of time won’t endear him to locals – but then many residents oppose any more visitors to the city at all.
Applying in peak season only – from April onwards – the €5 (£4.2, $5.6) access fee, introduced in 2024, is back, now in force for twice as many days each year. You pay online, and it’s checked by stewards at city access points. Venice is the first metropolis to levy such a charge, and other tourism centres are watching the trial keenly. |

And finally... in the UK | A 6th Century Byzantine bucket has been pieced back together from fragments that were discovered at Sutton Hoo in England across several decades - first in 1986, then in 2012, and also last year. Archaeologists believe the copper alloy artefact, decorated with a hunting scene, served as a cremation vessel. Take a look at find out more about the burial site. | |
