Cleveland City Council has more members, higher pay than most cities: Cleveland's 17-member council is both larger and better paid than any of the councils in the five U.S. cities with populations most comparable to here, cleveland.com research shows. Of 20 cities cleveland.com looked at, including the 15 largest cities in the U.S., only six paid members of council more than the $80,133 received by council members here. The other 14 cities pay council members less, and in many cases, considerably less than Cleveland pays. Among the 15 largest cities in the nation, only three have city councils with more members than Cleveland's 17. Read more. Judges say Armond Budish administration indifferent to county jail dangers: Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court administrative judge John Russo has sent a letter representing 34 judges to County Executive Armond Budish, accusing his administration of being indifferent to dangerous conditions in the county jail, where six inmates have died over three months. In his letter, Russo says inmates are denied access to medical and mental health care providers for up to a month, and staff shortages mean that inmates in need of psychiatric and medical care are not identified when they are booked into the jail. Read more. Breakdown of how Cuyahoga County voted in the midterms: Even in Cuyahoga County, the bluest of blue counties in Ohio, there are strongly red Republican areas. Democrat Sherrod Brown won re-election to the U.S. Senate with 53 percent of the vote statewide, getting 72 percent of the vote in Cuyahoga. But Brown still lost to Republican Jim Renacci in seven Cuyahoga cities, villages or townships. And although Democrat Richard Cordray captured 66 percent of the gubernatorial vote in Cuyahoga County, the statewide winner - Republican Mike DeWine - won in 18 Cuyahoga communities. Read more.
Ohio accepting proposals for ailments that can be treated with medical marijuana: Medical marijuana is not yet for sale, but Ohio is accepting proposals to expand the list of 21 medical conditions that would allow people to legally possess and use it. The State Medical Board of Ohio has received seven proposals so far, including severe arthritis, liver failure and “lots of pain.” Ohio’s medical marijuana program was supposed to be fully operational Sept. 8 but is running behind schedule.
