"She Would Be King" by Wayétu Moore Buy this book "She Would Be King" weaves together history and magical realism in a reimagining of early Liberian history. Moore drops readers into the lives of three characters: a woman banished from her village in West Africa; a man enslaved on a Virginia plantation; and the child of a British colonizer and a slave from Jamaica. The writing is magnetic, the plotting is intricate and the settings are deeply imagined. Even as we jump between characters and across continents, Moore pulls all the threads together perfectly. I'm still thinking about this book, as we compile our "best of the year" lists. List fever is in full swing at this point of the year: The New York Times 100 Notable Books of 2018 list is already out. What's the best book you read this year?
