Happy Year of the Ox: Building a Strong Basic Income Movement

Dear Friend,

We wish you a very happy and auspicious Year of the Ox! In the Chinese zodiac, the ox stands for strength but also for moving forward towards one's goals. And for hard work that pays off. Could there be a better year for strengthening the basic income movement across the world?

2021 has already started with some good news: The collection deadline for the European CItizens' Initative (ECI) "Start Unconditional Basic Incomes (UBI) throughout the EU" has been extended until December 2021 and a few days ago it crossed the 100.000 signatures mark!

Also, our Sunday afternoon Basic Income Tea is back with a new series! If you missed the informative discussion on the collaborative exhibition "Wow! Basic Income!", you can watch the recording (along with all editions from 2020) on our website or on our YouTube channel. The next session on 21 February will focus on the topic of "Friends or Foes? Basic Income and Degrowth"register here to get the invite!

How better to set resolutions for 2021 than by getting inspired? Unconditional Basic Income Europe (UBIE) aims to support and connect campaigners for basic income across Europe. So we asked our friends from European basic income groups to have a look back at 2020 and tell us about the highlights of the movement in their countries – find the links to the first published reports below!

#HowWeMadeBasicIncomeHappen Story Contest: The Winners Are Here!

In an attempt to close 2020 in a creative visionary mood, we invited our readers to write a fictional story from a future in which we have managed to make Basic Income a reality and describe how life has changed as a result.

We've had the chance to read a few wonderful stories, but in the end we couldn't decide between the two submissions with the most positive reactions on social media. So we decided to award both of them with a signed copy of Philippe Van Parijs’ and Yannick Vanderborght’s book “Basic Income. A Radical Proposal for a Free Society and a Sane Economy”!

Read the winning stories "Where Dreamers Follow and Wishes come True" by Maria Dolores Teresa Quirimit and "The women’s green revolution — Towards the UBI and beyond" by Javier “Jusore” Sanchez Bravo on our website now – and feel free to share them!
