BY VICKI FERSTEL | Staff writer Happy Memorial Day, everyone. It's a day for reflection and to honor our fallen heroes as well as a day for family, friends and fun. Here are some of the stories we're following, including this happy news: What an achievement! Eighteen seniors at Glen Oaks High School did the seemingly impossible: They earned college-level associate’s degrees and their high school diplomas at the same time. Staff writer Charles Lussier notes they are part of a small but growing trend of students in Louisiana earning two degrees at once when they finish their senior year of high school. Click here for his story about these young trailblazers. Build back stronger? The Legislature is examining a number of ways to get homeowners to fortify their roofs. One is a plan to give homeowners a $10,000 tax credit. Another is a bill to require local governments to permit the new roofs. Staff writer Sam Karlin reports that some lawmakers are pushing for a dedicated funding source for a separate grant program where people enter a lottery to receive $10,000 grants to build fortified roofs.
