One of America’s favorite pasttimes is critiquing the next generation. “These kids today,” we’ll say, “they’re so lazy. So much entitlement! When I was their age...” Of course, the people making these critiques had similar criticisms lobbed at them as young adults. It’s easy to forget what growing up feels like when those days are gone. On the latest episode of Viral Jesus, writer and book publicist Katie Schnack offers insight into “the gap decade,” which she defines as the transitional season of life everyone encounters in their twenties and early thirties. It’s a time of self-discovery and change, which can also feel a lot like overwhelming chaos. Validating the real challenges people face while growing up does not have to mean agreeing with every cultural wave or generational trend. Instead, it frees us to see our own seasons of transition through a lens of grace and gentleness, accepting God’s care for us in turbulent times, and extending that care to others during theirs as well. |
