The Timeless Appeal of My First-Generation Toyota 4Runner

BY KERI BRIDGWATER

Before the SUV era truly arrived in the 1990s, the previous decade was considered a golden automotive age for tech and performance innovation, but also a radical evolution for trucks and their sport-utility-vehicle progeny. The 1980s saw the introduction and/or proliferation of classics that are still coveted today, like the Chevy K5 Blazer, second-generation Jeep Cherokee, Suzuki Samurai and, perhaps most importantly, the Toyota 4Runner.

As the current owner of an ’80s 4Runner, there shall forever be a special place in my heart for the retro, tough-as-nails two-door SUV that still turns heads around town. And as I discovered at this year’s Aether Rally near Joshua Tree, there’s still a place for it among today’s latest and greatest off-roaders, too.

In Friday's poll, we asked which horse you'd bet on at the Kentucky Derby if you were solely picking by name only. Here are the results:

  • In last place with 11% of the votes: Grand Mo the First.
  • In fourth place with 14% of the votes: T O Password.
  • In third and second place, there was a tie between Mystik Dan and Catching Freedom, each with 22% of the votes.
  • And finally, our first place winner voted by 31% of you: Forever Young. Hopefully you didn't place bets on him, as Mystik Dan eked out the win in a photo finish.

How to Spend a Perfect Weekend in Vienna

To say Vienna has a rich history is an understatement. Situated on the Danube River, this strategic city served as the seat of the Holy Roman Empire, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and it was home to the Habsburg dynasty, which ruled for centuries.

Despite its reputation for music, world-class architecture and old-world charm, Vienna hasn’t enjoyed the same reputation for food and nightlife as cities like Paris, Barcelona and London. But all that’s changing, as the city’s new crop of exciting restaurants and bars are now woven seamlessly into the Viennese fabric, existing alongside grand hotels and cafes, while also breathing new life into less-expected neighborhoods. Consult this guide as you game-plan the perfect weekend in Austria’s capital city.

NEWS FROM THE WEEKEND

The Tom Brady roast offers more proof that the Belichick-Kraft relationship is burned.

Westin is updating its beloved heavenly beds.

California restaurants are upset with the state’s junk fee ban.

These are the nation’s hardest-drinking counties.

A new Hawaiian law could reduce short-term rentals.

The Pinnacle Guide Wants to Honor Great Bars in a New Way

What does being “Pinned” mean, at least in the cocktail world?

The Pinnacle Group hopes that word will help us change how we think of great bars and help foster the burgeoning cocktail tourism scene. The London-based organization, founded by drinks vets Hannah Sherman-Cox, Siobhan Payne and Dan Dove — a group behind everything from London Cocktail Week to the Global Bartending organization — just released its initial list of bars that offer excellence in drinks and service, along with notable contributions in the areas of philanthropy, sustainability and diversity.

Dubbed The Pinnacle Guide, these awarded drinks establishments earn a PIN (or two or three), somewhat akin to the stars of the food-oriented Michelin Guide. Interestingly, the bars self-nominate, sharing details across six assessment modules, from their drinks programs to staff management and the venue’s look and feel. From there, the list is evaluated and pared down, followed by visits to the bars from anonymous reviewers (who are trained beforehand) conducting in-person evaluations.

This Summer, Skip Spikeball and Try These International Games Instead

Why go international on this one? Well, we don’t want any of our opt-out-happy peers hiding behind “Spikeball fatigue.” And besides, foreign countries are really good at casual gameplay. It’s hardly uncommon on a European vacation, for instance, to see a large group of men relaxing in a park or at the beach, throwing around balls, discs or sticks of wood.

Get an eyeful of these fellas. They’re not trying to break records, let alone a sweat. They’re just playing. That’s the precise vibe I’m going for. Here are the seven games we're excited to try, from a Finnish bowling competition for the garden to a Croatian ball game for the beach.
