By Drew Broach | Deputy metro editor TRENDING UP: Every year it seems one or two Roman Catholic schools close in the New Orleans area, due to declining enrollment and tuition revenue; three are scheduled to shutter their doors after the current academic year. But one Catholic school’s enrollment has almost doubled in three years, so much so that it’s outgrown its space and will move for the 2022-23 session. TRAVELING FAR: If the U.S. Supreme Court eliminates the federal right to abortion, a Louisiana woman seeking to terminate her pregnancy will have to travel more than 667 miles to get one - perhaps to Illinois or New Mexico - up from an average of 37 miles now in a state with three abortion clinics. That illustrates one of several hardships facing these women, most of whom are poor, young or otherwise unable to travel. TESTING THE LAW: Two years after a crush of coronavirus cases at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Home in Reserve killed almost one fifth of its residents, families of two veterans have filed lawsuits against the home, testing a state law that largely lets health care providers off the hook for pandemic-related deaths.
