By KELLY P. KISSEL | State news editor Most new neighborhoods in Ascension are setting up road maintenance bills for residents before the first house is built. The special taxing districts were established without a vote, but this fall residents of one subdivision could see it on their ballot. The Belle Savanne subdivision has been built in stages, and residents who moved in before 2019 will be asked to join their new neighbors in paying the tax. Nearly 200 dogs were adopted this weekend. The Companion Animal Alliance said it had a surplus of dogs, so it waived adoption fees and also took care of vaccinations, microchipping and spaying or neutering. Entering the weekend, it had 323 dogs in a facility that can hold 177. The effort was intended to avoid having to euthanize dogs this week. While the sheriff and the park system are fighting over $2 million earmarked for retirement funds, East Baton Rouge Parish could be on the hook for the money. The sheriff is arguing in court that if BREC money cannot be given to the retirement systems while lawyers continue to argue, someone has to put the money up. He says the city-parish general fund is the likely source. |
