Mayflower in September: Drone boat sets sail just in time for Thanksgiving

You already know the story: British pilgrims set sail for the New World on a boat called The Mayflower and land at Plymouth Rock — eventually becoming some of the first American colonies. But this year, on the 400th anniversary of the voyage, a new Mayflower is sailing across the Atlantic. Unlike the first Mayflower, this ship has no passengers, no captain and no crew.

Instead, it’s an autonomous drone designed to observe the ocean and chart how difficult it would be to navigate these waters by boat in the present day. Scientists behind it hope it will give people of today a new understanding of how tough the journey was that settlers experienced all those years ago. Plus, since it’s a drone, nobody has to share any turkey with it. Experimental boats are wild — like this one that cleans the waters it navigates.
