| | Computers | Windows on Arm Gains Momentum as Tech Giants Gear Up for 2025 | | In 2024, the tech landscape saw a major breakthrough as Windows on Arm laptops gained momentum. After years of development, these devices finally delivered impressive battery life and strong performance, addressing long-standing compatibility concerns. The emergence of AI-powered features also marked a significant shift, with manufacturers integrating AI-focused tools directly into laptops. This year might have been dubbed the rise of AI PCs, but it undoubtedly belonged to Windows on Arm. | Qualcomm played a pivotal role in this success with its Snapdragon X Elite processors, offering performance and efficiency that rivaled Apple’s MacBooks. While gaming remains a challenge for Arm-based systems, native app support has become robust, making these laptops more appealing to a wider audience. Meanwhile, competitors like Intel and AMD introduced innovations to keep pace, emphasizing gaming compatibility and new processor designs. | Looking ahead, 2025 promises fierce competition in the laptop market. Qualcomm is preparing advanced chips, and Nvidia is rumored to join the Arm-based PC space, potentially reshaping gaming and AI capabilities. Meanwhile, Intel and AMD are ramping up their efforts to retain dominance in x86-based laptops. As the tech giants continue to innovate, the coming year is set to redefine what’s possible in the world of portable computing. |

| | | | Smartphones | Foreign Smartphone Sales in China Drop Sharply, Weighing on Apple’s Market Position | | Foreign smartphone sales in China took a sharp decline in November, highlighting the growing challenges faced by Apple (AAPL) in the country’s competitive market. According to official data, foreign phone shipments fell by over 47% compared to the previous year, with a 51% drop from October 2023. Although individual brand data wasn’t provided, Apple remains the dominant foreign player, with companies like Samsung capturing only a small portion of the market. | The dip in foreign phone sales comes as Apple grapples with intensifying competition from local brands, particularly Huawei, which has made significant strides after being impacted by U.S. sanctions. Huawei’s resurgence, especially with its high-end models, has attracted strong demand from Chinese consumers, surpassing Apple’s growth in the third quarter of 2023. | In response, Apple hopes its iPhone 16 series, released in September, will help regain traction in the Chinese market. However, the company faces delays in rolling out key artificial intelligence features due to regulatory hurdles. Meanwhile, domestic competitors are already showcasing AI capabilities on their devices. To boost interest in its products, Apple is offering discounts on the iPhone 16 as part of a Lunar New Year promotion starting today. |

| | Recent Tech Movers | Square Inc. (SQ) may have changed its name to Block, but the company still offers payment processing solutions to online and brick-and-mortar businesses. Its foray into digital wallets and cryptocurrency put it at the forefront of fintech innovation and in a good position to grow this year. | Zoom Video Communications (ZM) is one of the top video conferencing platforms out there, proving integral for our time of remote work and virtual communication. It maintains relevance as the work landscape shifts and should remain so in the coming year. | Dropbox Inc. (DBX) offers cloud storage and collaboration tools for personal and business use. After suffering from a frightening drop-off in March, the company has gained steady momentum that should continue for quite some time. | | Don’t Overlook This Tech Stock | Roku Inc. (ROKU) has not had a great year, losing significant stock value in back in March and remaining relatively flat ever since. What’s worse, its current price is down some 85% from its all-time high during the height of the pandemic. | The streaming provider is not one of the most well-known in the circuit, overshadowed by Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Disney+. It’s not currently profitable, and doesn’t look to be in the near future. | Gloom and doom aside, this heavy discount makes Roku a potentially compelling buy. It serves as an intermediary for the streaming giants with its line of TV plugins that enable digital content and still has an impressive calling of its own. | Revenue does continue to rise, where losses are disappearing. The company hasn’t ventured much into foreign markets yet, creating a source of additional dollars. I expect Roku to ride the streaming wave into a better position in 2025 and potentially beyond. | | | | Everything Else | AMD has introduced advanced processors for laptops, desktops, and gaming handhelds, aiming to enhance performance and energy efficiency. A growing number of Android phones are adopting Qi2-certified wireless and magnetic charging technology, showcased at CES 2025. Qualcomm unveiled its Snapdragon X chip for AI-powered PCs alongside a new desktop system at CES 2025. Belkin showcased the Stage PowerGrip, a battery pack doubling as a camera grip and stand for content creators. The CES 2025 tech show in Las Vegas highlighted innovations in AI, automotive technology, and sustainable design. |
