Unconditional Basic Income Europe BASIC INCOME TEA Poland & Hungary – 14 June |
The Authoritarian Responses to Corona: Poland & Hungary |
Basic Income Tea is back! This Sunday, 14 June at 5pm CEST, Dániel Fehér (UBIE Vice-Chair) and his guests Marta Tycner (Senior Campaigner at WeMove.EU) from Poland and Bence Tordai (Member of Parliament in Hungary) will look at the "Authoritarian Responses to Corona". The far right governments of Poland and Hungary are the infamous "bad boys" of Europe, when it comes to democracy and human rights. Their first answers to the Corona crisis – blaming foreigners, curbing democratic rights – were very similar and caused an outcry in Western media and the EU institutions. However, few people are aware that beyond that, the two regimes are very different when it comes to economic and social policy. Whereas the PiS-government in Warsaw follows a more eclectic, to some extent even social democratic approach, Hungary is ran by neoliberal hardliners. In our discussion, we will explore this juxtaposition more by looking at their social policy responses to the Corona-crisis and also on what impact this had on public debates in both countries. |

A closer look at the evaluation report reveals a number of positive findings that have not received the media coverage they deserve, writes Eetu Lehto in the debate corner of the UBIE website.
