In Conversation Series

Juan Logan with Michael S. Williams

Thursday, March 9, 2023, 6 PM

CAM Members: $15;

Not-Yet Members: $20

Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Juan Logan now lives and works in Belmont, North Carolina. Logan’s artworks address subjects relevant to the American experience. At once abstract and representational, his paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, and videos address the interconnections of race, place, and power. They make visible how hierarchical relations and social stereotypes shape individuals, institutions, and the material and mental landscapes of contemporary life.

Michael S. Williams is about fostering community. He spent 15 years in media at The News & Observer where, among several roles, he was the curator of ArtsNowNC.com and managing editor of the triangle.com and Triangle Today publications.

Raku

Instructor: Renato Abbate

Raku firing is an ancient Japanese firing technique developed by Zen Buddhists. During this firing process, pottery is removed from the kiln while it is red hot and then placed immediately into a container that holds combustible materials such as: sawdust or newspaper. Once the lid is placed on the container the ceramic piece is starved of oxygen creating a unique effect on the surface of the pot.

In this class we will make forms in preparation for our Weekend Raku workshop scheduled for Saturday, April 15.
