Two New Exhibitions

It is a busy week at CAM!


Join us on Thursday for the opening of two new exhibitions - Lugar de Encuentros/Place of Encounters and Traer a Luz/Bring to Light.


Return on Friday for an Artist Talk with Lugar de Encuentros/Place of Encounters artist Renzo Ortega.


Then join us on Saturday as we celebrate with FREE admission for everyone along with events and activities all day!

Lugar de Encuentros /

Place of Encounters Opens!

North Carolina is home to a rich diversity of voices, and this is reflected in its community of Latin American artists. Work from Lugar de Encuentros / Place of Encounters often straddles two worlds, reflecting both birthplace and resettlement, exploring both tension and harmony in the relationship between the two.


From film to installation art to paintings to photography, this exhibition delves into the variety of migrant experiences, offering a space for connection, a chance to encounter another’s experience through art. Artists include

Nico Amortegui, Cornelio Campos, Rodrigo Dorfman, Mario Marzan, Renzo Ortega, and Rosalia Torres-Weiner.

5-7 PM Music in the Galleria with Marscia Martinez-Mendoza and Luis Barragán


Music Selection will feature traditional classical and selections of traditional folk music from Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Puerto Rico and Peru. Selections of Mariachi and huapango music from Mexico, Cueca music traditions from Chile and Andina music from Peru, to popular and contemporary music from artists like Cafetecuba from Mexico, Chabuca Granda from Peru, Carlos Vives from Colombia and more.

7 PM In Conversation with

Rosalia Torres-Weiner

Rosalia Torres-Weiner is an artist, activist and community leader in Charlotte, NC. Her art captures the themes, colors and rich symbolism of her native home of Mexico. In 2010, Rosalia shifted the focus of her work from commercial art to art activism, after witnessing the repeated injustices and dysfunction of our immigration system.


Rosalia Torres-Weiner be joined by three Dreamers who are part of her portrait series in Lugar de Encuentros/Place of Encounters.

Traer a Luz/Bring to Light Opens!

Traer a Luz/Bring to Light features photography from brother and sister Dayana and DiegoCamposeco. Traer a Luz/Bring to Light explores the bonds of trust – between sister and brother, photographer and subject, family and community as well as light and darkness, life and death, work, and culture within the context of southern Latinx identity.

Artist Talk with Renzo Ortega

Renzo Ortega (Lima, Peru 1974) is an artist based in Carrboro, NC. Renzo received a BFA in painting from the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes del Peru (1999), studied at the Art Students League of New York (2000-04), and has his MFA in painting from Hunter College (2014). His artwork has been exhibited in solo and group shows in the United States and Perú and has been commissioned to create public art projects and community murals.

The community is invited to CAM for FREE admission all day along with family activities, Spanish language tours, salsa dancing, food trucks and more!

Special guest and Lugar de Encuentros/Place of Encounters artist Rosalia Torres-Weiner brings her Red Calaca Mobile Art Studio to CAM from 11 am to 3 pm offering a fun day of art-making activities.

Family Activities led by community partners including Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity, United Way of the Cape Fear Area , Cape Fear Latinos and more will take place throughout the day. 


Spanish language tours will take place at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm. Wilmington Latin Dance will be giving dance lessons and hosting an open dance in the CAM Courtyard 2pm to 4pm. Food trucks will be in CAM’s parking lot serving all day.

Become a CAM member on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and receive $5 off memberships! Museum representatives will have a membership table and encourage the community to join CAM that day with a special discount.

Art Explorers is going on a field trip! Join us at Airlie Gardens with Miss Georgia from Cameron Art Museum. Garden admission included with this program.


Not only are flowers beautiful to look at, but they also provide important food for pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Learn about some of our spring blooming flowers and plant your own native wildflower seed to take home and support pollinators in your own yard! We will also read a book about flowers and create our own flower-inspired artwork. The program will be held on the Oak Lawn.


Art Explorers is geared towards infants, toddler and preschoolers, but big brothers and sisters are welcome to join and create art with us. Space is limited so preregister to guarantee your spot!

Gallery Talk with Dayana Camposeco

Dayana Camposeco’s work captures intimate often everyday moments. Diego Camposeco described himself as a magical realist, his images as a form of writing with light, blended fact and fiction. NC Black Film Festival Honoring Pam Grier

Opening Night

The Black Arts Alliance is proud to present the 20th Annual North Carolina Black Film Festival, May 18-21, 2023 in Wilmington, NC with this year's special guest Pam Grier, our Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. The four-day juried and invitational festival of independent motion pictures by African-American filmmakers will showcase features, shorts and documentary films. Trophies will be awarded in each category.


At 7 PM, there will be a Q&A with honoree Pam Grier and Rhonda Bellamy, followed by a screening of Foxy Brown at 7:30 PM.

Come take part in our first bilingual Art Explorers! We will read Wonder Walkers / Caminantes Curioso, then explore our new exhibition Lugar de Encuentros / Place of Encounters together. We will create artwork inspired by our book and exhibition. Our book will be read in both English and Spanish, and a Spanish-speaking staff member will offer translation of the gallery exploration and art project instructions.

Closing the Gap with Arts Integration: Professional Development Workshop for Educators and Parents of Students in Grades K-8

Free for educators in Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow, Pender, and Sampson counties


Deepen your understanding of CAM’s USCT public sculpture Boundless through the lens of history, poetry, and movement. Learn what arts integration is and how you can employ it in your classroom. These workshops are designed to teach educators how to use the arts to teach core curriculum and help close the achievement gap through active learning strategies that engage all learners. These workshops are offered free to all educators in Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow, Pender, and Sampson counties. Participating educators will receive a certificate of completion to submit to their respective counties for CEU credit consideration.

When everything is an art supply, anything can happen! Your tiny artists will get to visit the galleries at Cameron Art Museum and use the works in the exhibition as inspiration. Then we will cut, tear and practice making marks with unconventional materials that will help create the masterpiece of their dreams! We will finish our week of with a celebration and an art show!

Long Pose Life Drawing: Dancer Theme

If Degas can do it, why can't we? Next up in Long Pose Workshop series - Dancers are the theme! Featuring professional local dancers in simulated rehearsal environment. Each day will start with shorter single model pose, break, to return with two models for an extended pose up to three hours. Format is self-guided - develop composition in medium of your choice. Landscape Photography is a wide-ranging topic. It can be as simple as documenting the flowers in your backyard or as grand as the million acres of a western National Park. While we don't have any sweeping vistas to compare with the iconic west, we do have many beautiful natural areas in and around Wilmington. This session is open to all skill levels and any digital device, so grab your digital camera, smart phone or tablet and sign up.

Charcoal: Versatile, Impactful & Forgiving

Instructor: Donna Moore

Open up to one of art's most forgiving traditional mediums. Versatile: A tool for loose sketching, completing a polished drawing, or adding dynamic expressive punch in mixed media. Impactful: Charcoal can go from the darkest dark to the softest palest grey leaving a dusty trail of delicate descriptive values in between. Forgiving: It lives to be pushed hard, erased, and reworked. Purchase minimal supplies- studio materials available for experimentation.
