CAM Community Day Family Festival Saturday, August 12, 2023, 10 AM-12 PM FREE Museum Admission All Day
Join us for Family Fest, celebrating our upcoming Fall classes and workshops, and the unveiling of our new outdoor sculpture Ode to Oblio by Dana Gingras!
Sculptor Dana Gingras created Ode to Oblio in 2006 as a subtle nod to the 1971 animated film The Point. It’s a tale in which young Oblio (born with a round head) lives in a land where everyone else has a pointed head. He has a series of adventures, and ultimately embraces his uniqueness and receives acceptance.
Ode to Oblio traveled to locations in North Carolina and Southeast US before collectors Glen and Florence Hardymon acquired it. Glen and Florence Hardymon and their work were the recent focus of Promise, an exhibition that ran November 12, 2022 to May 21, 2023, and highlighted promised gifts from their collection along with works from others and new acquisitions. Ode to Oblio, 2006, is their latest gift to the museum.
The day kicks off at 10 AM with the sculpture unveiling followed by live music with Mr. Mark, face painting by Funomenal Faces, and a variety of art activities led by our talented Museum School teaching artists.
FAM Fest is also an opportunity to celebrate CAM’s Museum School’s fall classes and workshops with live demonstrations and a chance to meet Museum School teachers. |

Lugar de Encuentros | Place of Encounters Artist Talk with Cornelio Campos Thursday, August 17, 2023, 6 PM CAM Members: $16; Not-Yet Members: $20
Cornelio Campos is a self-taught Mexican-American artist based in Durham, NC. Mr. Campos immigrated to the United States from Mexico as a teenager—a journey and process that now influence many of his paintings. Vibrant colors, iconic American symbols, and intricate geometric patterns define Mr. Campos’s work.
Through his paintings, he illustrates some of the harsh realities of immigrating to America that immigrants often overlook. Moreover, he highlights deep-seated political issues that contribute to Mexican immigration, including the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
As an artist with no formal training, Mr. Campos’s paintings exemplify techniques that he has learned through observation, and often defy traditional color schemes. His paintings contain therapeutic, controversial, and enlightening elements that make them both unique and unforgettable.
