Mary's Art Explorers

Summer Song

It is with great honor that Cameron Art Museum pays tribute to Mary Cameron Hoey by naming its most popular and long standing family program after her. Mary’s Art Explorers is a story time, art making, and museum exploration program.

Inspired by our featured story Summer Song, we will celebrate the colors of summer! We will look for examples of summer inside our exhibitions, then create collages using some of our favorite images of summertime.

Art Explorers is geared towards infants, toddler and preschoolers, but big brothers and sisters are welcome to join and create art with us. Space is limited so preregister to guarantee your spot!

Galleries After Dark

Susan Nuttall: Looking at Donald Sultan in 20 Years

Thursday, August 11, 2022, 7 PM

Free with museum admission

Walk with Susan through the galleries as she presents observations on Sultan's work. She will discuss his use of materials, the influence of pop culture in his work, and the bold designs in his compositions.

Susan serves on the board of the Carolina Beach Mural Project. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Susan studied Commercial Art and Advertising at Utah State University.

Join us on Saturday, August 13 Meet CAM education staff and our phenomenal roster of teaching artists, while touring the Pancoe Education Center. Wander through our mixed media studio space, the clay studio, and kiln room and learn about our Fall classes.

A History of Wilmington and Lower Cape Fear

Instructor: Dr. Chris Fonvielle

Join Dr. Chris E. Fonvielle Jr., Professor Emeritus in the Dept. of History, UNC Wilmington and author, for a four part conversation on the history of Wilmington and the Lower Cape Fear. Dr. Fonvielle will lead discussions on the region's lay of the land, its earliest inhabitants, the arrival of Europeans and Africans, settlement, development, growth, wars, epidemics, riots, rebirth, renewal, and much more.

Landscape Photography

Instructor: Alan Cradick

Landscape Photography is a wide-ranging topic. It can be as simple as documenting the flowers in your backyard or as grand as the million acres of a western National Park. While we don't have any sweeping vistas to compare with the iconic west, we do have many beautiful natural areas in and around Wilmington. In this six-day session, we will explore the Ft. Fisher Hermit Boardwalk, the riverscape of Carolina Beach State Park and much more.

Drawing Inspired by Nature: Fall Foliage

Instructor: Antoinette Vogt

Use nature as inspiration to create beautiful drawings! Improve your drawing ability through close observation of nature, capturing the unique shapes and colors of Fall plants and blooms. Learn different techniques to enhance your drawings and add color. Class time will be spent outside, drawing and gathering, then returning to the studio to refine drawings. Focus will be given to composition and developing new ways to capture your subject. Experimentation is encouraged. Students are welcome to bring in clippings from their own garden or yard. Some previous drawing experience suggested but not required.

Painting on Location

Instructor: Todd Carignan

Take your painting out of the studio and into the outdoors! This class is about organizing your set-up, choosing a subject and making the most out of your time. The instructor will be working in oils, but all media are welcome.

Celestial Photography

Instructor: Alan Cradick

We will spend a Saturday evening at the Brunswick Town State Historic Site photographing the night sky. We will have the facility to ourselves and plenty of time to create stunning images. On Sunday, we will meet at Cameron Art Museum to share our work in a group critique. This intended as an intermediate DSL workshop. You will need a sturdy tripod, a wide angle lens and a camera with manual settings.

A Walking Tour of Wilmington

Instructor: Dr. Chris Fonvielle and Anne Brennan

Join Executive Director Anne Brennan and Dr. Chris E. Fonvielle Jr., Professor Emeritus in the Dept. of History, UNC Wilmington and author, for a walking tour through downtown Wilmington near the locations of our early art community. Hear the history of artists like Elisabeth Chant and her circle of friends, and visit the site of CAM's beginning as St. Johns Museum of Art in 1962.

Please note that we will be touring the old streets of downtown Wilmington. If you require any assistance for the program please inquire at the Museum School.
