CAM Spotlight The Future of LatinX Representation Now!, 2023 |
The Future of LatinX Representation Now!, 2023 the site-specific mural created by Rosalia Torres-Weiner with the help of fellow artists Ben Billingsly, Susan Nuttal, and Eva Crawford welcomes visitors to Lugar de Encuentros/Place of Encounters.
As they enter the gallery space they are immediately surrounded by it's colorful imagery and visual scale. |
Rosalia Torres-Weiner in describing The Future of LatinX Representation is Now!, 2023, writes,
"Latinx representation in American culture is building, accelerating, and shifting as the Latinx youth of yesterday become the leaders, thinkers, and cultural influencers of tomorrow." |
"This mural depicts the multi-generational nature of Latinx youth claiming their place in American society. The Millennials are represented as hummingbirds, who serve as cross-pollinators of Latinx and American culture and ideas, spreading wisdom and spreading their wings. The fish represent Gen-Z, who grew up as digital natives, comfortable leveraging technology as an equalizer. The wolves represent Gen-Alpha, who I see as the first generation that will realize the full effect of Latinx representation in America. The patterns and iconography represent participation across all fields of endeavor, including technology, science, politics, business, and arts.
While full Latinx representation in American society is still a dream that many Latinx people are striving for, I believe that it is within our reach and that the youth of today will make it possible." |

Rosalia Torres-Weiner is an artist, activist and community leader in Charlotte, NC. She grew up in Mexico City and has lived in Charlotte, NC for 25 years. In 2010, she shifted her focus from commercial art to art activism. She is known for colorful murals, vibrant paintings and her series of portraits of undocumented youth, the Dreamers.
She uses her art to document social conditions and raise awareness about issues affecting migrant communities such as family separation, access to public education and racism.
Her work often features digital augmentation and augmented reality, featuring the stories of her subjects told in their voices. “I believe that through the use of technology, art becomes more personal, more interactive, and ultimately more impactful.” |
North Carolina is home to a rich diversity of voices, and this is reflected in its community of Latin American artists. Work from Lugar de Encuentros / Place of Encounters often straddles two worlds, reflecting both birthplace and resettlement, exploring both tension and harmony in the relationship between the two.
From film to installation art to paintings to photography, this exhibition delves into the variety of migrant experiences, offering a space for connection, a chance to encounter another’s experience through art. Artists include Nico Amortegui, Cornelio Campos, Rodrigo Dorfman, Mario Marzan, Renzo Ortega, and Rosalia Torres-Weiner.
