WEEKLY E-NEWS

CAM IS FOR ACTIVE MILITARY & VETERANS!

The Cameron Art Museum is a cultural gathering place for all of our community - and that includes members of our active military and veterans. We're excited to offer several programs to support these amazing people.

CAM is a proud member of Blue Star Museums. Blue Star Museums is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families, in collaboration with the Department of Defense to offer FREE admission all summer to currently serving military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve.

The 2025 program began on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 17, 2025 and ends on Labor Day, Monday, September 1, 2025. Armed Forces Day was established in 1949 for citizens to come together and thank military members for their patriotic service and we are honored to offer this program again this year.

The free admission program is available for those currently serving in the United States Military— Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and Space Force including members of the Reserves, National Guard, U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps—and up to five family members. Visitors just need to show their military ID card at our front desk.

CAM sits on the site of the Battle of Forks Road and we are charged with telling the story of that battle and the United States Colored Troops (USCT) through Boundless, on view outside in the contemplative PNC USCT Park. CAM's Cultural Curator Daniel Jones leads an insightful tour of Boundless and the stories of these veterans Fridays at 1PM. Free with museum admission.

In recognition of Juneteenth, the Veterans Creative Arts Program in partnership with CAM presents Veterans Juneteenth Workshop: Legacy & Memory through Artifacts of Service. On Wednesday, June 25, we invites service members to a special morning of history and creativity with artist Jermaine “JP” Powell and CAM Cultural Curator Daniel Jones.

Jones will share the powerful story of William J. Gould, an enslaved plasterer from Wilmington who escaped by sea during the Civil War and served in the United States Navy. Following the talk, artist JP Jermaine Powell will lead a hands-on art-making session drawing inspiration from museum objects and personal experiences.

As part of outreach to our 8-county radius, CAM is bringing the Stories We Carry workshop FREE for all active military and veterans to the Jacksonville-Onslow Council for the Arts on Saturday, July 26. Instructors Dina Greenberg and Susan Polizzotto lead participants to express their personal experiences through writing and art. No previous writing or art experience is required.

The Stories We Carry workshop returns to CAM on August 17.

MINDFULNESS MEDITATION IN THE GALLERIES

Friday, June 20, 9 - 9:50 AM

Free Introductory Session

Join us in a contemplative gallery space for an introduction to mindfulness meditation, taught by Certified Teacher Bonne Lynn Anderson.

Mindfulness is the practice of bringing attention to the present moment with openness and without judgment. With regular practice, it builds awareness, clarity, and the ability to respond rather than react. Research shows it can also boost balance, focus, strength, and resilience. This secular practice is accessible to all and offers lasting benefits both on and off the cushion.
