World War I began the year before and Fisher and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Conner, were traveling from New York to France to help set up a field hospital. On May 7, the ship neared the coast of Ireland, which had become a danger zone with prowling German U-boats. Lusitaniaâs captain had been warned to use defensive maneuvers such as zigzagging to evade German torpedoes but the captain refused. Around 2:15 p.m. May 7, the Lusitania was struck and sank within 18 minutes.
