MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter! Yours truly at Reader Rewards is back and better than ever!  A little time away in the sun at the beach, by a pool - always does the trick!  Just like that - and we've blown through the entire summer here in Hampton Roads; completely through Labor Day.  School is back in session, the tourists have now largely filtered out of the area and - YES - footback is back in a big way!

Was it not just yesterday that we all welcomed Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start to summer - along with the tourist crowds to The Oceanfront in Virginia Beach??  Now, we've blown right past Labor Day and with it - the last Rock N' Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach.  The Pilot's Ray Nimmo captured the overview here. A nice 20-year run has unfortunately come to an end.  The end of the Rock N' Roll Half Marathon comes right at the same time as short-term rentals have finally been approved for the Oceanfront.  The growth of hotels at the Oceanfront will now have some competition.  If you missed the coverage from The Pilot's Stacy Parker - catch it right here.

Speaking of development/growth - did you catch the two stories out of Chesapeake recently?  As if the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake didn't have enough going on already - more development off Elbow Road?? The Pilot's Gordon Rago covered the story for us.  Geez, another 150 homes.  Right before this story broke, The Pilot's Trevor Metcalfe covered Amazon's announcement of the opening of a career center in Chesapeake. Along with opening a delivery station in Norfolk and Hampton.  If you missed it, read up on it here.

COMING SUNDAY:

The 20th anniversary “Day of Remembrance and Hope” in Hampton on 9/11/2021. This is the longest-running commemoration of the 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks in the Hampton Roads region.

Hampton held the first event in honor of those lost just 3 months after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the passengers of flight 93, who fought against hijackers presumably bound for the U.S. Capitol and died in a crash in Somerset County, Pa. Since then, it has been held annually on Sept. 11.

The image of President George W. Bush learning that a second plane had crashed into the twin towers at the World Trade Center in New York as chief of staff Andrew Card whispered the news into his right ear, is one of the most iconic and debated of 9/11.

Seated in a chair in the second-grade classroom at Emma E. Booker School in Sarasota, Florida, listening to 7-year-olds read from “The Pet Goat,” Bush reacted to the news stoically. For the next seven minutes, he listened to and engaged with the students before apologizing to his host and taking leave to deal with the terrorist attacks.

The state has exceeded 12,000 deaths linked to the coronavirus, a grim milestone in the pandemic representing the immeasurable grief families have felt over the past year-and-a-half.

Virginia hit the mark last week, according to state health department data, as confirmed cases of COVID-19 swelled to at least 606,000.

The new situation in the public health crisis is a seismic shift from where the nation was just two months ago, when President Joe Biden declared America’s “independence” from the disease. Now hospitals are filling up again with severely ill patients, putting strains on staff and resources.

Nearly 3 million Virginians remain unvaccinated.

Many people long for a white picket fence, but Kim Carr always envisioned hers as pink.

Born and raised in Smithfield, she returned to the region in October 2019 and opened The Pink Picket Fence in Carrollton in August last year amid the progression of the coronavirus pandemic and related restrictions.

“I was terrified,” she said. “But, the community has been super supportive.”

The roughly 1,000-square-foot shop sells seasonal decor, gifts, women’s clothing, jewelry, accessories, charcuterie boards, wine glasses, candles and more.

“This is like my baby,” said Carr, who runs the shop along with niece Natalie Carr. “It’s stressful and crazy, but it also fills my cup.”
