Farmers have more questions than answers as they evaluate current opportunities, but there are several things that are coming into focus.

Before the pandemic hit, the meat department was down 0.1% in pounds and pork was down 0.8% in pounds. But in 2020, the retail meat case took off. Meat sales increased 11% by volume, with pork leading the way over beef, chicken and turkey, up 11.9%.

A U.S. attaché in Argentina estimates the country’s 2020/21 bean crop at 45 MMT, which is 2.5 MMT under USDA’s official production peg. It expects the country to export 5.5 MMT of that grain, which is also 1.35 MMT lighter than USDA projects.
