Three fascinating Palace of Westminster toursAvailable this spring and summer
Did you know that the home of UK Parliament is open to all? The Palace of Westminster — a place where laws are made, shaped and debated — runs regular tours that allow you to follow in the footsteps of iconic leaders and explore incredible spaces that have been at the heart of British politics for centuries (you’ll probably recognise a fair few of them from the news). There are tours running across spring and summer, including over the Easter break, May half-term, and the summer holiday. Ideal if you’re looking for something unique, educational and family-friendly to do while school’s out! In August, the Palace of Westminster has something rather special up its ornate sleeves… the return of its Speaker’s House tours. These are suitable for ages 16+ and make for a brilliant addition to a mini-break itinerary, or as an end-of-summer treat for teens getting ready to study politics at sixth form or uni. Read on to find the right tour for you. Palace of Westminster Audio ToursIf you’d like to explore the Palace of Westminster at your own pace, opt for an audio tour. This self-guided adventure includes a multimedia device with audio and visual content in different languages, and is a particularly good shout for families. Not only is there an audio option specifically for the under 12s, but you can nab a completely free child (5-15) ticket with every full paying adult. Plus, you’ll be free to linger on any areas of tour that capture your child’s interest — from the iconic Chambers of the House of Commons and House of Lords, to the ornate Central Lobby, to the 900-year-old Westminster Hall. Palace of Westminster Guided ToursPrefer some company as you explore the home of UK Parliament? Go for the guided tour! You’ll explore all the same spaces as on the audio tour, but you’ll be getting fascinating trivia face-to-face, rather than through headphones. Children are welcome on this tour, too, and there’s availability across the summer holiday. Speaker’s House ToursHere’s a chance to experience some fantastically stately spaces that are usually used for official meetings and receptions. This tour opens the door to the State Apartments of Speaker’s House at the Palace of Westminster. Inside, you’ll find incredible art and architecture as you explore rooms that have played host to royalty and heads of state for over 160 years. Highlights include the Crimson Drawing Room, the portrait-adorned State Dining Room, and four-poster state bed, where monarchs were historically invited to sleep the night before their coronation. Speaker’s House tours are running exclusively in August and are almost guaranteed to sell out — get your tickets while you can!
