ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

1775 Marinus Willett and the Sons of Liberty confront British soldiers and seize five wagon loads of weapons as the Redcoats evacuate New York City.

1933 The first drive-in movie theater opens in Camden, New Jersey, the brainchild of Richard Hollingshead.

1944 D-Day: The allied powers cross the English Channel in the largest amphibious military operation in history, landing on the beaches of Normandy to begin the liberation of Europe from the Nazis. The allies lost 2,000 troops at Omaha beach, but by day's end, 155,000 Allied troops had stormed the beaches.

1966 James H. Meredith, who in 1962 became the first African American to attend the University of Mississippi, is shot by a sniper after beginning a long civil rights march through the South.
