Greetings from Destin, Florida, where we watched as Selection Monday turned out purple and golden for the LSU baseball team. The Tigers were awarded the No. 6 national seed for the NCAA Tournament, meaning they will host a regional and a super regional should they advance. First up is a regional opener against Little Rock, which at 24-32 has the worst record and lowest RPI (243) of any team in the 64-team field. They will play at 2 p.m. Friday at Alex Box Stadium on the SEC Network, followed by regional No. 2 Dallas Baptist against No. 3 Rhode Island at about 6:30 p.m. The Tigers deserved to get a coveted top-eight national seed based on the season they've had, I wrote in my column, though LSU's seeding topped its RPI ranking by four spots. What the Tigers might not deserve, or have expected, is about as wide-open a path to Omaha and the College World Series as you could ever imagine. SLU athletic director Jay Artigues, chairman of the NCAA baseball selection committee, gives us his thoughts on the Tigers. We've also got the lowdown on LSU's regional foes right here. As I said earlier, I'm in Destin, Florida, where the SEC Spring Meeting began Monday evening. The meeting kicks into full gear Tuesday, and we've got four issues to keep an eye on during this year's important business session. Finally, I've had the sad task of writing an obit about former LSU quarterback and assistant coach Lynn Amedee, who died last week at age 83. Thanks for reading and subscribing folks. Be sure to follow us all week for the latest from here at the SEC Spring Meeting and from LSU's preparations for the NCAA baseball tournament. Scott Rabalais |
