| Conduct a pilot study before you go full bore on hemp production. Janna Beckerman, Ph.D., professor of botany and plant pathology at Purdue University, suggests that farmers, especially smaller farmers, start growing hemp on a small plot of land when they’re considering adding hemp to their production. It allows participation without making a large up-front investment, she says. “We’ve worked with several growers who have been slowly working their way up … whether it’s [to] a couple hundred acres or over a thousand acres,” she says.
