Tips for managing application turnaround times

More than half (56.1%) of 2021 MSP Salary Survey respondents supervise others, an increase from 51.2% in 2020 and closer to the 56.5% in 2018. And supervisors’ teams are growing: Like their 2020 counterparts, 2021 respondents are likeliest to oversee three to four full-time equivalent (FTE) staff (20.7%). Not far behind are those who reported leading teams of five to six FTEs (17.3%).

Application processing turnaround time is one of the most commonly reported metrics within a CVO. Timely credentialing is critical to the organization and its customers. The credentialing process almost always takes a longer amount of time to complete than originally anticipated. There is a high risk of unique circumstances developing that require additional inquiry and analysis. A CVO can initiate several strategies to manage turnaround times.

Erin Muellenberg is a former medical staff services director in a large community-based hospital and now serves as a healthcare attorney for Polsinelli Law Firm, practicing exclusively medical staff law. She was the chair of the NAMSS Education Committee for 2020 and 2021 and is intimately familiar with the daily operations of the medical staff organization and its governance process. Muellenberg caught up with CRCJ recently on all things medical staff services and credentialing.

As of this month, all applicants seeking their initial physician licensure in Massachusetts or applying for license renewal through the state's Board of Registration in Medicine (BORIM) must complete training on implicit bias. Massachusetts joins several other states that already require similar training for healthcare workers.
